Slowdowns caused by Covid-19 closures, ports clogged with hundreds of ships going nowhere, geopolitical tensions, Brexit-induced chaos and container shortages: recent years have strained the logistics system to breaking point and we’ve had to get used to near-systemic delays in goods delivery. More specifically, national data for 2021 shows that sea freight suffered average delays of over 7 days with respect to agreed delivery dates (source: ASSOPORTI and SRM).

One recent example: a cargo ship carrying food to Turkey for a well-known Italian company was loaded on 21 January, left Genoa on 27 January and reached the port of Istanbul on 2 February, precisely on schedule.
